AOL NetFind is a hot site that gets a lot of traffic. Powered by Excite, AOL NetFind claims over 20 million visitors a month. This is a big site with dozens of options and places to go. Follow the second URL to the submission page. Enter URL and E-mail only. Their spider goes out about every two weeks and sites will be added then.

Business Seek  Listing effective within two weeks
Business Seek provides a listing of more than 100,000 companies and professionals around the world. You can list your site in several languages, including English, French, Dutch, Spanish and Italian. Follow the URL to the submission page. Enter your business information and "Send".

Excite Listing effective within two weeks.
Excite gives you access to more than 50 million web pages, 140,000 pre-selected web site listings, and thousands of Usenet postings. Their ICE (Intelligent Concept Extraction) search technology looks for related concepts as well as keywords. Excite Network reaches over 20 million unique cunsumers each month and is one of the best overall search resources. Follow the URL to the submission page. Fill out a very short form, with a drop-down list of categories. Click "Send". It takes about two weeks to appear.

Goto Listing must be set up by site owner
This search engine used to be called WWW Worm, but was purchased by idealab! and renamed Goto in 1997. While they no longer accept free listings this is a very important site, so you may want to check out their advertising options.

Google Listing usually effective within one month
Our current favorite. Google is one of the fastest indexes and continues to grow. Set up by those wizkids at Stanford University and based on three years of research in web search and data mining in the Stanford Computer Science Department, their search engine uses mathematical analysis and sophisticated text-matching techniques to get you results relevant to your search. Index contains 25 million pages+. To submit follow the second URL to the submission page, give your URL and a description and they will spider your site and add it as soon as possible.

HandiLinks  Listing effective in: 2 weeks
This is a great directory. "With over 18,000 topics, 700,00 listings, and 30,000 new listings per month, HandiLinks is "quietly" becoming the web's favorite directory." HandiLinks listings are all organized into a hierarchical index that's fast and easy-to-use. . HandiLinks has categorized over 700,000 sites into 45 user friendly main categories with over 18,000 subcategory topics. Follow URL to the Home page. To submit, select a category and additional sub-categories as needed until you get to a page with a green button at the top of the list. Click it to get to a submission page. The form is rather long but easy to fill out. Click "Submit Entry" at the bottom. It takes about two weeks to get listed.

Since it's beginning in 1996, HotBot has been named the Number One search site in independent reviews, and has received top honors in 1997 and 1998 as the "best search site on the Web" from Smart Money, PC Magazine, PC Computing CNET, and PC World. This is a great new site. InfoSpace has over 112 million US and Canadian listings of people, government offices and businesses that include fax and toll-free numbers. They claim that their AccuMail is the largest and most accurate email directory in the world. The Company focuses on content with broad appeal, such as yellow pages and white pages, maps, classified advertisements, real-time stock quotes, information on local businesses and events, weather forecasts and horoscopes. Once known as "NewHoo", the Open Directory Project relies on the input of its users, the public to provide the necessary labor for to help keep the site cleaned up and the directories current. One can volunteer in a specific area and become an editor of that area. They say it helps keep the garbage out and their content good. To submit a site, select categories and subs until you get to the appropriate one, then click "Add URL" at the top of the page. From there you go to a very short form, and once submitted you wait for an editor to review it and see if it's suitable for addition.

REX (World Wide Web Resource EXchange) Listing effective in: 1 week
The REX Internet Search and Index is nearly two years old, and has grown extremely fast over the last few months. REX has made a lot of changes recently. The search engine is faster, new categories have been added, and they have incorporated their new " 3-dimensional, diminishing value, context sensitive navigational array" technology to make your searching and surfing even easier than before. Follow the URL to the submission page. First do a search to see if you are listed. If not, you go to a short form. Click "Continue". Go to a confirmation page, and change information as necessary. Then, select a category yourself or "Let Rex" pick for you, up to 3 categories. If you let Rex select, you're not told what categories are selected. NBC and Snap.com have joined up to create this directory. It has all the usual stuff that most other popular directories have, and it's search results come back fast. To submit a URL, find categories and subs, click Submit at the appropriate place. Sites are accepted on approval, and it can take up to 6 weeks, depending on the backlog, to get listed.

Be sure to list in the right area. You can follow the URL to the submissions page and add your site that way, or go to the Home page, go down the categories, and click "Add a Site" form the category page. For a site to be added to Galaxy, it must be carefully reviewed. They receive many more requests to add sites to the Galaxy Directory than can be easily processed. To guarantee a timely review and decision on your request for your site to be added to Galaxy, they charge a non-refundable $25 fee. With this fee we can assure that your site is reviewed within 30 days and that you receive an email response with their decision. Even if you choose not to pay the fee, your site will still be eligible for review by Galaxy, however, since the backlog is large there can be no assurance that your site will be reviewed in a timely manner.

What-U-Seek was started in 1996. They call their spider Winona and claim to break all search engine speed records. Their motto: "Where you seek, not search. Where you sail, not surf." WhoWhere is largely for people finding, but their incorporation of various regional Yellow Pages links also supports businesses. The search engine they use is Lycos. It's a kind of 'front-end' for a U.S. phone book, including white and yellow pages. Follow the URL to the Home page. For a business, click on "Yellow Pages" in the bar on the right side. Click on your state. You will be sent to the Yellow pages directory that serves your state. Yahoo  Listing effective in: back-logged
As you know, this is the Big One, the Big Yahoona. Yahoo is decidedly one of the Top Three of all the Internet search resources. Be careful how you submit here. If all the rules aren't followed, your site could get dumped. Follow the URL to the Home page. Select a category and then sub-categories until you get to the specific place for your site. Go to the bottom of that page and click "Suggest a Site". Get instructions, and then go through 4 steps to submit your site. You can submit to more than one category, so when looking through the lists, make a note of any other places your site should go. You're offered a text box in Step Two to enter additional categories, or suggest a new category to list your site in. This saves time and having to go through the submission process several times.

ZenSearch  Listing effective in: 2 weeks
This directory judges sites on three basic criteria: Quality Content, a Nice Look, and Good Feel. All types of sites are listed and submission is free. Very worthwhile place to be listed. Your site must be reviewed by a real person.
