Yahoo to Buy Overture

In a move that rocked the technical industry on Monday, Internet giant Yahoo offered to purchase pay-for-click Web advertising company Overture in a deal worth US $1.63 billion in stock and cash.

Update regarding SQL network attack

We experienced a network outage yesterday caused by the most recent attack of the SQL worm attempting to replicate itself.

This was a global attack on the Internet that appears to have started last Friday evening and has been reported in the news as bringing down Bank of America ATM banking service in the Eastern U.S and 911 emergency service in Seattle, Washington. The end result on our network was a flood of Internet traffic that created intermittent connectivity problems and latency issues for some areas, but did not result in any of our servers being infected. We found a fix to fend off the flood of traffic which brought our network back to normal flow immediately as of 4:00pm EST.

Although all of our Microsoft SQL servers had already been protected last July with the software patch to prevent compromise, the unparalleled Internet traffic generated by the estimated 250,000 infected SQL database servers worldwide did have a temporary negative effect on connectivity to our network. We are implementing a permanent fix to avoid such incidences in the near future.

New MS SQL 2000 Database support

The WebMarket West Professional Hosting division is pleased to announce enhanced support for MS SQL 2000 for our shared hosting customers. Beginning October 1, 2002 all new Windows 2000 (Win2K) Commercial and E-Commerce accounts are being provisioned with the MS SQL 2000 database on new high-performance servers dedicated entirely to supporting the popular Microsoft SQL 2000 datase. Current WebMarket West Win 2000 shared hosting customers will be informed regarding migrating their existing MS SQL databases to the new servers shortly.

Also on 1 October the amount of MS SQL disk space available with the Win2K Commercial and EC plans will increase from 20 MB to 50 MB. The MS SQL disk space quota is separate from the web site disk space quota, which will not be affected. This change will apply to all Win2K Commercial and Win2k ECommerce plans.
